Here's my ambitious plan:
--Metropolitan Museum of Art
--get cheap, last-minute tickets to "Wicked"
--some historic home (ideas?)
--eat real Italian food
--order an excellent sandwich at a non-chain delicatessen
--eat authentic New York pizza
--visit Purl Soho
--see the WTC site/memorial
--see the Manhattan Temple
--visit a local bookstore
--bring something home...but what? I'm not a name-brand gal, not the tourist t-shirt type.
You see, I learned last year on my trip to D.C. that I can go to an astonishing number of places when I have no kids with me. Ideally, I would love to have about half of the kids along so I can share the world with them; since that's not possible in this case, I'll just efficiently jet around and take pictures for them. And bring them a book...I always bring a book.
Now, friends and family, bring on the suggestions. Also pray the plane doesn't crash, because I always worry about that. Of course.

I have no suggestions since I've never been to NY, but I hope you'll share your pictures when you get back so someday when I go I'll know what to do!
For a GIANT sandwich, go to Roxy Delicatessen in Times Square. Can't miss it - neon sign. Delicious desserts in the window.
For good Italian food, go to Trattoria Daniela at 728 8th Ave, between 45th and 46th Sts (about a block away from Times Square).
These are probably touristy places, but I liked them!
Wicked is very awesome! I'm sure you will love it. Go to Times Square for the cheap tickets (huge red and white TKTS booth).
I hope you have a fabulous time!!!
Katherine, Rachel and myself are going to NY next month. I will be waiting to hear what places, things that you would recommend. Have a great, safe trip.

That sounds like so much fun! Have a blast!
Cissy, I am so jealous. Can I go with you? PLEASE? Of course, I am kidding, but I would love to go. I haven't been since high school, and we did only touristy things, so I'm short on advice. I will definitely pray for you and your plane trip; I feel this anxiety when I travel as well. I hope you have a wonderful time, and I can't wait to see pictures when you get back!
"Wicked" is by far my favorite show so that's an excellent choice. However, if you can, don't go cheap. The closer the better or you will lose some of the experience. I've been able to get discount tickets through various agencies. You will probably have to pick up the tickets yourself in the city at some hotel lobby. Start Googling!
Real Italian food is hard to come by. My Dad and I had some favorite places a long time ago but they've all closed. Little Italy anywhere would be your best bet. I would also recommend Wo-Hop in Chinatown (Mulberry St.). The Chinese there is divine!!!
NYC is more tourist friendly than ever now! My favorite spots, NYC Library (near Grand Central Station), 5th Ave Shops (H&M, J Crew...), and the Museum of Natural History.
Download a subway map and plan your trip ahead of time so you can get real familiar with street names and directions. Have a great time!
Oh...and the Sabarros in Time Square has excellent pizza. Huge slices, thin crust, fresh marinara and lots and lots of real mozzarella baked to perfection in a real pizza oven. Now that's how you do a NY slice! :-)
i've got the historic homes thing taken care of. i have access to places most new yorkers don't even know about. plus i can get us onto some of the most exclusive roof decks in the city for the most spectacular views. and i have some secret places i want to go to as well. most of it won't cost a dime. working on the wicked tix. glad you guys are coming. need the break for a few minutes. xo
